Filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, it was co-produced by Walden Media and distributed and theatrically released by 20th Century Fox on January 22, 2010. The movie was given a negative reception from critics but it earned $112.5 million on a $48 million budget, making it a success at the box office. Tooth Fairy was released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc/DVD/digital copy combination pack on May 4, 2010. A direct-to-video sequel, Tooth Fairy 2, starred Larry the Cable Guy as the title character[3] and was released on March 6, 2012.[4]

Derek Thompson is a minor league ice hockey player, nicknamed the "Tooth Fairy" for his habit of knocking opposing players' teeth out. One night, Derek steals a dollar from his girlfriend Carly's six-year-old daughter Tess that had been left for her lost tooth, and tells her that the tooth fairy doesn't exist. He receives a magical Summons under his pillow, which causes him to grow wings and transports him to the realm of tooth fairies. He meets his caseworker, Tracy, and the head fairy, Lily. He has an adversarial relationship with them. Lily tells Derek that he is a "dream crusher," due to his unsympathetic dealings with children like Tess. He is sentenced to serve two weeks as a tooth fairy. Later, he meets Jerry, who gives him his tooth fairy supplies, which include "Shrinking Paste," "Invisible Spray," "dog peppermints "Amnesia Dust", "cat away" and a magic wand that will only work if he believes.
Derek visits several children and tries to collect teeth and give out dollars, but what with cats, waking children and being 'called' in the middle of a hockey match leading to his shrinking himself and jumping in a toilet to escape, he is not doing very well at it. Lily says that he is the worst tooth fairy ever and denies Derek any more supplies from Jerry for the remainder of his sentence, criticizing his lack of faith in children. Afterward, he is approached by a fairy named Ziggy who provides him black market supplies. Later that night, the items malfunction and Derek is seen by a child's mother and arrested. While behind bars, Tracy tells Derek that Lily extended his duty to three weeks. However, he offers to give Derek proper supplies if he will start acting like a tooth fairy. Carly bails Derek out.
Derek works on improving his tooth fairy skills and bonding with Tracy and Randy, but when Derek can't score a goal at a hockey game, he takes his frustration out on Randy, telling him that he will never become a rock star. With his dreams crushed, Randy tearfully smashes his guitar and a disappointed Carly breaks up with Derek, telling him his biggest flaws are his inability to be optimistic and that he can't say "what if".
Later, Tracy comes to Derek's house, much to Derek's annoyance. He announces that he is a tooth fairy-in-training, but that Derek's dream crushing reputation hurts himself more than others as Derek orders him to get out of his house. At the next hockey game, Derek gets back on the ice and sees Tracy. Tracy wants to teach Derek the importance of dreams, encouraging Derek to score a goal and go get Tess' tooth. With a renewed spirit, Derek scores the goal, gets into his tooth fairy costume, and flies away, while Tracy spreads Amnesia Dust on the audience to cover up the event.
At Carly's, Tess sees Derek taking her tooth, but she promises to keep it a secret. Derek apologizes to Randy and encourages him to keep pursuing his dreams, using his magic wand to grant Randy a new guitar. Downstairs, Carly sees Derek as a tooth fairy, but assumes that he rented a costume for Tess' sake, causing her to forgive him. Derek flies Randy to the talent show throwing Amnesia Dust on him when they arrive.
Derek heads back to the fairy realm to give Lily the tooth, and is told that because of this job, as well as for reaffirming Tess' belief, he has been relieved of his fairy duties. Lily explains that he will never see the tooth fairies again and will have Amnesia Dust thrown on him. Before departing, Derek says a friendly goodbye to Tracy. Lily throws Amnesia Dust on Derek and transports him back to the talent show. There, Randy outperforms everyone and ends up forming a band. Derek proposes to Carly, and she accepts.
The first time when 'The Rock' Dwayne Johnson turned into a fairy wearing that pink frock or dress with wings, I was howling with laughter. This man was one of my favourites when I used to watch WWE. He was so strong, menacing and seemed to be so bad and angry all the time. Then he made his foray into Hollywood and he was one of those rare WWE stars who actually had a charm about them. Nobody was more surprised than me when he started to do only Disney kind of films. I didn't think he would last long, but this guy has made it big in PG movies. He truly convinces us that he is not the bad-ass he was made out to be during his wrestling career and he is so genuinely charming. He is not embarrassed to make a fool out of himself and I think he really likes children. He carries the movie on his able shoulders with some help from other good actors. One constant thing about his movies is that he is a jerk in the beginning, who goes on to be a good guy in the end. That may sound boring and tiring, but Dwayne Johnson is genuinely funny in comedic moments and moves our heart in sad situations. Derek doesn't believe one should have dreams as it is highly unlikely that one will achieve their dreams and ultimately will be unhappy. So he tries to give it straight to her, that there are no fairies or any of the other imaginary creatures. Carly saves her daughter from the horrible truth and chides Derek for his stupidity. That night Derek receives a summons from 'The Department of Dissemination of Disbelief' from the Toothfairy Land. He is thrusted upon the job of a toothfairy for two weeks, with a threat to extend the punishment if he doesn't do it with the spirit of a toothfairy. When Derek finds out it wasn't a dream, his life changes drastically.What were you expecting when you sat down to see this movie? Citizen Kane?! Just enjoy the movie for what it is and stop grumbling about the inconsistencies of the movie. Hollywood is obsessed in making movies for kids which are way too sweet and saccharine and totally unreal. Though the premise of this movie about a man getting the job of a fairy is also unreal, it is actually quite good. The kids, though cute, are not exactly over the top sweet. The movie, as with all kid movies, has the moral that one should dream and not get dragged down by others who tell you that you are no good. Dwayne Johnson is believable as the jerk (somewhat sensitive, but still a jerk) and the transformed good hearted man. I really liked the scene where Derek imitates Dracula for the little girl, there are lots of sweet moments. The boy is a normal kid who doesn't have interest in anything other than music and girls. He doesn't like Derek, but Derek makes a deal with the boy to impress Carly. The toothfairy kit he's given; with the invisible spray and amnesia dust among other things is cool. Tracy (Stephen Merchant), the caseworker in Toothfairy Land is also funny, but I must say Julie Andrews is wasted as the fairy Godmother. I saw this with my younger cousins and they absolutely loved it. Recommended to everyone who like the Disney movies of this genre.7/10
Even though it's for kids, this movie turned out much better than I thought it would. The Rock pulls off the role of the Tooth Fairy quite well. He plays, Derek Thompson, a hockey player known as the Tooth Fairy because he knocks a lot of teeth out. He has a girlfriend played by Ashley Judd, why her I don't know because it is a very minor role, whom has 2 kids. One night Derek almost slips up and tells the young daughter there is no tooth fairy. But her mom saves the day. That night Derek is summoned to fairy land and in a unique way is given things for fairies to use and trained to fly. I liked this part the best. Billy Crystal cameos as Jimmy, the fairy whom gives him the shrinking paste, fairy dust, etc... Amnesia dust is great.So Derek is sentenced to 2 weeks as a tooth fairy by the head fairy, Julie Andrews. Of course, he learns valuable lessons over this time.I also liked the parts where he goes into people's homes in various ways. It was funny, we all need invisible spray.FINAL VERDICT: I liked it and recommend it.

The first thing one notices here is that Netflix seems to have a long way to go before having any claim to strength in that particular arena. With only 9 percent of the top 100 2010 movies, Netflix seems to come on the short end of the stick when it comes to making streams of box office winners online. In a future post, I will examine whether this is because their strength is more in older titles than in recent ones but, as far as the data currently show, the subscription model offered by Netflix would probably have a hard time fighting with a premium cable TV movie channel. 2ff7e9595c
